本属は本種のみを含み、世界の熱帯、亜熱帯に広く分布する。日本では関東地方～沖縄、小笠原で知られ、南西諸島や小笠粟原ではマンゴーやグァバなどを加害している。横浜では７月頃に街路樹のヤマモモに多数発生しているのが見られる。体や翅が一様に褐色であることで他のアミメアザミウマ亜科から容易に識別できる。

Genus Selenothrips is monotypic and widespread in the tropc and subtropic areas of the world. In Japan, this species has been known at Kanto to Okinawa and Ogasawara Islands, and causes damage to mango or guava in Nansei Islands or Ogasawara. Many individuals occurs on the leaves of Morella rubra at roadside around July in Yokohama. It can be easily distinguished from other panchaetothripine members by uniformly dark body and wings.
